You asked for it and after months of planning and plotting, I’m finally ready to take this course to the masses (that’s you, you’re the masses).
“But Jess, I am super busy! I can’t commit to that day or time.”
Great, because you’ll access each weekly lesson on your own time.
“But Jess, I hate workshopping other people’s writing, it’s the worst!”
Great, leave that part to me. There is no workshop component to this course so that means no reading other manuscripts and giving feedback…which frees you up to write.
“But Jess, I’ve never written anything before.”
And…? There was a point in your life when you’d never walked before, never spoken before, but then what changed? You just did it.
“But Jess, I want to and I’m ready to but I can’t afford it!”
I get it. It’s worth every penny but it Isn’t cheap— that’s why I’m offering a payment plan (scroll all the way to the bottom) and 15% off with the code: ChangeMyLife
Now there are no excuses to get your writing out of your head and on to the page!
This is a class for those of you who live too far away to come to a live class in New York and for those of you who don’t have the time to get your butt in the chair for a regular online class. You’re getting exactly what I offer to my face-to-face students in New York minus the sitting in traffic to get to class.
You still get intense edits from me, recorded Q&A sessions with amazing editors (past panelists have come from magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle, Parents, New York Times Modern Love, Teen Vogue and Time Magazine).
If you have been desperate to share your story with the world but you’re not sure how to take it from experience to essay. Don’t worry, because I do. It’s kind of my thing.
Over the course of this six-week class, you will get over 'writer’s block' and start producing work from week one. We will write, revise, write again and revise again until we’ve sharpened the details, dialogue and overall arc of your story. You’ll learn how to embrace the revision process and understand why it is so necessary. We will take a deep (like, real deep) dive into a variety of published personal essays and identify what they have in common so that you can apply their tricks to your pages.
I’ll work with you one on one to ensure that you grasp which of your details work better in a scene, which pieces of dialogue construct characters and propel your story forward. We will also work to edit out the characters and sentences that aren’t pulling their weight.
But mostly what I can offer you is consistent encouragement, accountability and constant support. Writing is hard, you don’t have to do it alone.
Together, we will do the work it takes to identify the key factors in your story that take it from punchy anecdote to powerful essay.
Space is limited in this course so that I can make sure you each get the attention your stories deserve.
I am so excited to get started so what are you waiting for? Scroll to the bottom to apply,

Testimonials from former students:
-I took Jessica’s essay class in March and by that summer I was reading MY OWN WORDS in the New York Times. That’s not a coincidence, that’s the evidence of having a writing teacher who knows wtf she’s doing.
Amanda R. - New York City
-"Taking Jessica’s personal essay class changed my writing completely. Her edits have a way of leaving the page and planting themselves in the back of my mind."
Elizabeth P. - New York, NY.
-"There is no instructor that has ever been more generous. Not just with her time and feedback, but Jessica is always ready and willing to share truths about her own creative process as well as her hard-earned industry contacts."
Charles B. - New York, NY
-"When I signed up for Jessica’s class, I thought maybe she’d help me tighten up an essay I’d been working on and send me on my way. I never imagined that she would teach me step-by-step how to mine one experience for multiple essays. "
Megan E. - New York, NY
-"The Upsides of Jessica's class: Her assignments were creative and fun. Her feedback was honest and painfully spot on. Her personality is so fun and engaging that those two hours always seemed to fly by. The Downsides of Jessica’s class: That I had to share her with a dozen other students."
Emily S. - New York, NY
