Behind Every Good Writer is a Great Editor
Have you ever received a rejection email from an editor with a simple note along the lines of: Thank you for submitting but this is not right for us.
My guess is you do one of three things (personally, I like to combine all of these 3 things into one evening armed with a glass of sancerre and an episode of This Is Us):
2) Convince yourself that A) You're not a good writer or B) No one else is brilliant enough to "get" your work.
3) Put your writing in a drawer and forget about it.
My job is to help you take it out of that drawer, dust it off and get back to work until it shines. Writing is hard... you don't have to do it alone.
A good editor tells you how much potential your piece has and fixes a couple of commas. A great editor peels through the distracting details and pulls out the story you're trying to tell. The pages might be bleeding with red ink when you get them back but if you can get past the first wave of overwhelming emotion you'll quickly realize that revising your work is much easier than you think. Compliments are nice but corrections are necessary, find an editor that does both.
My clients have had their memoirs published by Random House, Harper Collins, Scribner, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group and many others.
My students have had their essays published in The New York Times, NYT Modern Love, the Washington Post, LA Times, Tin House, The New Yorker, Marie Claire, Glamour, Self, GQ, Vanity Fair and many more national publications.
